If you follow the tech headlines, it is easy to get the impression that Large Language Models (LLMs) can seamlessly handle everything on day one. But when you are working with complex enterprise data, especially in spatial and location analytics, the reality is a bit more different.
Business teams want the incredible speed and flexibility that AI offers, but they also need to know that the insights driving their site selection and retail strategies are accurate, secure, and properly governed.
That is why we took a very deliberate approach when developing LuCII, the new AI assistant integrated directly into our web-based location analytics platform, CII-Locate.
🗣️ The "Chat-to-Map" Experience
Our primary goal with LuCII was to make spatial data accessible to everyone, not just GIS experts. Powered by Google Vertex AI, LuCII allows you to interact with your data naturally.
Instead of building complex spatial queries from scratch, you can simply ask a question in your own words. LuCII translates your natural language into a precise data query behind the scenes. If you aren't quite sure how to phrase what you are looking for, the assistant provides predefined topics and sample queries to help guide you. Once the results are ready, they populate in a clean data grid that you can easily download and drop right into your reports.
🧠 A Model That Actually Learns Your Language
One of the biggest frustrations with off-the-shelf AI is that it doesn't understand your company's internal jargon. Every retail and property team has its own shorthand, abbreviations for specific brands, unique regional definitions, and preferred ways of formatting reports.
To solve this, we treat LuCII less like a generic LLM and more like a highly specialized Small Language Model (SLM) that lives within our application.
As you use CII-Locate, LuCII continuously improves based on inputs from both your team and CII experts. We build custom vocabulary sets that teach the AI to understand your brand's specific terminology and your unique strategic aims. Because the model adapts to how you actually speak and work, the outputs become increasingly accurate and uniquely personalized to your organization over time.
🛡️ Designing an AI LLM You Can Trust
While chatting with your data is a great experience, we know that simply plugging an AI into an enterprise platform isn't enough. Left entirely on their own, language models can occasionally misinterpret complex business logic. To make LuCII a tool you can genuinely trust, we focused heavily on transparency and human oversight:
- Human-in-the-Loop Expertise: We don't expect the AI to guess when things get complicated. If LuCII encounters an ambiguous or highly complex query, the system is designed to alert our own CII data specialists. Our team reviews and refines the logic to ensure your question is answered correctly and that refinement feeds back into the model to make it smarter for your next query.
- Total Transparency (Explainable AI): We aren't fans of “black box" AI where the math is a mystery. If your data team ever wants to see exactly how LuCII arrived at a specific insight, they can easily view the actual SQL logic behind the query.
- Strict Data Privacy: Your proprietary data stays with you. We have structured LuCII so that your sensitive client data is never exposed to the external AI model. The AI only processes the logic of the query itself, keeping your internal metrics completely secure.
- Validated Sources Only: LuCII generates its insights exclusively from cleaned, verified CII data sources. This ensures the answers you get are grounded in reality, eliminating the risk of AI “hallucinations."
🤝 A Practical Balance
We believe LuCII offers the best of both worlds: the conversational flexibility that everyone wants from modern AI, grounded in the reliability, personalization, and oversight that actual businesses require.
We are really excited to see how our users leverage LuCII within CII-Locate to discover new market gaps and streamline their daily workflows. If you are a current user, jump in and give it a try and if you are new to CII, feel free to contact us for a quick walkthrough of how it works!
